What The Fractional? What on earth is a Fractional COO?

Daniel Currie |

If you’ve just heard someone throw around the term Fractional COO and thought, “What the heck does that even mean?” — don’t worry, you’re not alone. Sounds like one of those flash corporate buzzwords, right? But stick with me, because behind the fancy name is actually a pretty practical idea — especially for Kiwi businesses trying to punch above their weight.

Right, so what is a Fractional COO?

Let’s break it down without the corporate fluff.

A Fractional COO (that’s Chief Operating Officer, for those of us who didn’t grow up in a boardroom) is someone who handles the operational side of your business — but only part-time. They’re not a full-time hire. They’re not hanging around the water cooler every day. They swoop in, sort out the chaos, build systems that actually work, and help get your business humming — all without you needing to fork out a full C-suite salary.

Think of them like your ops guy on tap.

So... they’re like a contractor?

Not quite. A contractor is someone you bring in to do the work. A Fractional COO is someone you bring in to lead the work. They’re part of your leadership team, even if it’s just one or two days a week. They’re not just ticking boxes — they’re helping you steer the ship.

They can manage teams, fix dodgy systems, help with hiring, sort your supply chain, get your KPIs in line, and maybe even help you sleep better at night knowing the business isn’t running on duct tape and hope anymore.

Who actually needs one?

You’d be surprised. Here’s a classic Kiwi scenario:

  • You’re a growing business — maybe in manufacturing, construction, logistics, or even tech.

  • You’ve hit that awkward middle ground: too big to wing it, too small (or broke) to justify a full-time COO.

  • The team’s flat out. The owner’s wearing 14 hats. You’re dropping balls and losing sleep.

  • Stuff’s getting done — but not the right stuff. Or it’s taking way longer than it should.

If that’s sounding a bit close to home, a Fractional COO could be best thing you meet this week.

What do they actually do?

They do what a full-time COO would do — just not full-time. That means:

  • Turning chaos into systems.

  • Helping your people work smarter, not harder.

  • Keeping an eye on cashflow, ops costs, and margins.

  • Making sure your big plans don’t blow up in your face.

  • Helping you scale without everything falling to bits.

But can we afford one?

Here’s the kicker: You probably can — because you only pay for what you need. No big salaries. No long-term contracts. Just strategic, high-impact leadership at a fraction (ha) of the cost.

Some Fractional COOs work a day a week. Others might work on a project basis — say, for three months to help you sort your ops before a big expansion. You can scale them up or down as you go.

And because they’re outcome-focused, you’re not paying for fluff. You’re paying for results.

TL;DR — Why should you care?

Because sometimes, you don’t need more staff — you need better systems.

You don’t need to hustle harder — you need someone who can clear the path.

A Fractional COO is there to bring structure, strategy, and a bit of sanity — especially when the wheels feel like they’re about to fall off. Whether you’re scaling up, spinning out, or just stuck in the mud — they’re there to help you move forward without blowing the budget.

If you want to level-up, a Fractional COO could be your ticket to a shorter task list and a better outcome next quarter.
